How much dry food should i feed my cat?

I would like to ask your opinion on what i am feeding my cat. He is about 1 and 1/2 years old and he used to get diarrhea alot. It would start one day, then stop for a few days and then it would start again. He always gets sick in the middle of the summer and it usually lasts a few days and it doesn't seem to get any better.

So i have been trying different food. He has been taking 2 Tb of dry food 3 times a day for a while now. I have read online that cats should eat about 1/3 of their weight in dry food a day. So my question is, how much dry food should i feed my cat?

He eats about 3 cups of dry food a day.

And my other question is, is there any other type of food i should be using to make sure he is getting enough nutrients?

I agree with the 1/3 part, but i like to give them more. I think cats are pretty particular. 1/3 to 1/2 should be good for them, but it should be the right food for them and be made in the right way. It may be that they arent getting a certain nutrient they need from the food. I think when we feed them more, we can also do it when they need it the most. If they are getting a lot of dry food, and are not being kept hydrated, then they may be lacking in other ways.

He also gets 1-1/2-2 cups of canned food 3-4 times a day. I read somewhere to not mix canned and dry food. I have not tried it myself, because he has gotten used to having the dry food. I do give him water when i can, but my question is, what else should i be doing to help my cats be healthy?

If your cat isn't getting enough protein then he's gonna get constipated from lack of it, and you should never ever feed him too much fiber. Too much fiber is a big contributor to cats getting constipated.

So what are you feeding him?

My cat is a 2 yr old female spayed. She has had a dry diet and a canned diet her entire life. She never seemed to have trouble with constipation. I also fed her the same food I give my 2 year old son, which is about 1 Tb of dry food a day.

I'm currently trying to cut down on the dry food.

I had a cat with that problem, and I had her on 1/4 a cup of canned food and 1/4 a cup of raw meat. It was enough to keep her full. I've always fed her dry food so I don't know why the problem occurred. I had to get rid of the dry food because it was causing the problems.

I have two cats.

A 6yr old male (Lucky) and a 4yr old female (Dee Dee).

Dee Dee has always been a bit on the thin side. I got her from the shelter (from a cat who had passed away) so I do not know the reason why. I've read that you should put a little more protein than you do for dry food, but I only feed them 1/2 cup of canned food. I do have to admit though, if I put out more, they will eat a whole bowl, and then I have to fill it up.

I have always given them 1/3 of their weight in dry food, but my wife says they should be on 1/4 to 1/2 of their weight in dry food, and not canned. She is right, since they are constantly sick and have diarrhea. I've also found that some of my cats have a bad habit of eating the dry food out of the bowl and throwing it on the floor. I don't understand why they do this, since it is their food.

My question is:

Should you use more dry food than canned? Should they eat less canned food?

I feed mine 1/2 of the dry, 1/2 of the wet. They also eat kibble, so I just add a little to whatever I am currently feeding them. I would not add dry food unless I was feeding them a complete and balanced diet. A cat should be getting enough protein to help repair tissue and heal injuries. Most of the proteins cats get come from the animal food you eat. You can supplement with kibble as you feed your cat the correct amount of calories.

I feed my two cats 2 lbs of dry food 3 times a day. They don't seem to be that interested in it, but they get more than 1/2 a cup of food each. They do also have dry food on the floor with them so it might look like they like it more
