How long is an hour to a dog? It is difficult to imagine a shorter one, but there is a dog that can make the same number of steps in less than one of ours.

By The Numbers

The average human has a heart rate of 70-80 bpm (breaths per minute). The average dog has a heart rate of 180-250 bpm (depending on the breed). Dogs have a much longer heart rate-to-body weight ratio than humans.

We humans run on 2.5 to 3.5 liters of oxygen per minute while our dogs only run on about 1.5 liters of oxygen per minute.

Dogs don't have an under-arm sweat gland. This means that their body temperature is regulated by the temperature of their breath. This is very helpful when they're running in cool weather.

In humans, the skin's surface temperature is about 10 degrees higher than the core temperature. This temperature differential is even more pronounced in our canine friends.

Human and dog breathing rates and volume vary by several orders of magnitude.

Canine body temperature can vary up to 20 degrees C above the ambient temperature.

Humans can go without sleep for 24 hours without suffering any ill effects. Our best guess is that canines can last at least three days without rest.

Our heart beats once every one to two seconds. The heart of a canine can beat as often as every three seconds.

Most humans need to get eight hours of sleep a night. We don't know how long a dog requires.

The average human has about 100 trillion cells, while the canine has at least three times as many (300 trillion).

Humans' ears and eyes are on opposite sides of the head. The dog's are right next to each other.

A canine needs only four to six liters of water per day. Humans require about 18 to 21 liters.

The average dog weighs about 50 pounds. The average human weighs about 175 pounds.

I wonder how a human can stand up with only one leg...
