Caution dog mafia: Do not buy unscrupulous dogs

It is a cruel business at the expense of dogs, which also seems to be flourishing within Germany's borders. The dog mafia sells large numbers of animals with little effort for maximum profit. The puppies born from the mass breeding of dirty backyards usually have no prospect of a life free of suffering. They are smuggled to Germany under miserable conditions and sold here to unsuspecting animal lovers.

Goods dog: This is how the dog mafia acts

The dogs are mostly "produced" in uninspiring backyards, often in Eastern Europe, at top speed. The boundaries between "breeders" and dealers often blur here. In this business, the dog mother serves as a birthing machine, dog puppies are separated from the mother far too early and are hastily sent to Germany via dubious channels - often in tight boxes or bags and without sufficient food.

In this country, the animals are then sold by the so-called dog mafia from trunk to motorway service areas and through comparable dubious trading venues. Customers are attracted by particularly low prices for pedigree dogs, which are usually unvaccinated, sick and, in the worst case, disturbed. Family tree papers are mostly worthless or forged. Cheap offers in advertisements and newspapers, prettied up websites or Ebay - buyers are lured in a variety of ways with ridiculous prices for a dog.

Tips for buying a dog: Exclude dubious providers

In order not to unwittingly support the dog mafia, you shouldn't even buy four-legged friends through classified ads or at animal markets (especially in Poland or Belgium). Be skeptical about particularly low prices for pedigree dogs. Tip: Always ask before buying whether the dealer belongs to a breeding association, and it is best to ask other questions about the animal, for example with regard to its parents. You should be suspicious at the latest when you watch the dog and find that it looks disturbed or particularly anxious. Never buy animals at dubious trading posts such as motorway service areas or parking lots.
