A matching harness and leash can make your dog the talk of the neighborhood. Whether your dog is a German shepherd or a Chihuahua, coordinating accessories can be both fashionable and functional.

Step 1

Decide what type of harness the dog needs. A regular walking harness is the most common type of harness, and has a single D-ring on top for the leash. A pulling harness has one D-ring on each side to attach it to a sled or wagon.

Step 2

Select a pattern and color that compliment your dog. A brindle or merle dog looks best in solid-colored harnesses, while a solid-coated dog can be fitted with a patterned harness. Blues, greens and purples look good on red or yellow dogs, such as Irish setters and golden retrievers. Blue or gray-based dogs can wear bright colors such as red, yellow, and orange. Dogs with white or black coats look good in any color.

Step 3

Buy a harness and leash that are the same width. Narrow widths up to 1/2 inch are best for smaller breeds, while larger dogs can wear harnesses up to 2 inches in width.

Step 4

Take the dog with you and try on the harness and leash before purchasing. Most pet stores allow customers to bring in pets, and trying on the items prior to buying assures proper fit. Slip the harness over the dog's head, buckle it between the legs, and clip on a leash. Walk the dog for a few minutes to make sure the dog is comfortable before purchasing your new matching harness and leash.

  • If you're unsure of your pet store's pet policy, call ahead and ask.

  • Found a harness and leash that fit your dog, but not in a color you like? Write down the manufacturer, item number and size, and look at the company's website for additional color choices.
